Are You Sure You Want to Become an Entrepreneur?

The best entrepreneurs, like the best professionals, are masters of multitasking

Here are a few steps to being gritty:

1. Talk about goals with other people who are going to be critical to achieving them. This is especially important if you're getting started. It's helpful if they have experiences that tell them that your goals are attainable.

2. Tell those people how you're going to accomplished your goals. Be honest.

3. Surround yourself with gritty people. Indeed, the old cliche about there being four C's that make up a successful entrepreneur rings true: a focused, accountable, and passionate entrepreneur will work hard. But even more important than that, they will have others working hard for them as well. The four C's don't mean that much unless you surround yourself with those who are critical to accomplishing your goals.

4. Understand that you can't do everything alone. Successful entrepreneurs are indeed masters of putting things into motion, but that's not all they do. When you ask them how they did it, they'll tell you they had teammates. That's critical because successful entrepreneurs know they need others to help them get there. Look for ways to have others help you get things done.

5. Get help in some areas, and be clear on the roles you want others to accomplish your goals. You'll get things done, and you'll have others help you to get things done as well.

The best entrepreneurs, like the best professionals, are masters of multitasking. They understand they can't do everything alone. That's not to say they have enough time for everything they want to accomplish. A professional, like a professional athlete, may not have enough time to do everything he wants to do. It's not the same. The entrepreneur is focused on making things happen, not doing things. That's why it's essential to surround yourself with gritty, dedicated, and reliable people who will help you get things done. That's why you need a mentor as an entrepreneur.

Mentors are critical to a successful entrepreneur. It's not simply that they help to ensure success. It's that they help to provide a positive outcome, as well. They help to ensure that you find your way to make things happen. They help to ensure you are accountable. And that's why entrepreneurs need mentors.

Mentors help to ensure that you have others to play the role of the audience in your story. They help to ensure that your stories are told through your actions. Those are critical to a successful entrepreneur. Even if you have everything they say is necessary. Even if you know, you must have a coach even if you don't have enough time to find the right person for the job. Entrepreneurs need to know that someone will be there to hear your story and play your part. And that means that you need a mentor. Whether that happens naturally as you gain experience or whether it happens after you've been in business for a while is not critical.
